How They’re Done

Piercing

Piercing typically is done one of the following three ways:
Usually the piercing feels like a hard pinch, and hurts for a few seconds.

Tattooing

Tattooing can be done by hand, but usually involves a special electric gun that repeatedly punctures the skin with an ink-coated needle. The needle goes about 1/10 of an inch into the skin (the dermis, or second layer), depositing the color in the hole. A tattoo is actually hundreds or thousands of tiny ink-filled holes, drawn in a pattern. It can take hours to get a tattoo. The process can be painful (topical anesthetics can help) and can cause a little bleeding.

Henna tattoos are done by applying a type of stain to the skin, made from the leaves of a plant. These tattoos usually are brown, green or red, and don’t last. They usually fade after a few weeks. However, longer-lasting black henna tattoos contain a chemical that can irritate the skin, causing it to itch, blister or scar.
