What Causes Rosacea
No one’s too sure what causes rosacea, a common condition affecting 14 million Americans. While anyone is at risk, it is more likely in adults ages 30 to 50 who have light skin, blond hair and blue eyes. While the cause is unknown, some researchers think that rosacea is related to one of the following:
- Your genes, as well as your environment
- A swelling of the blood vessels
- A tiny mite that lives in hair follicles and clogs the oil glands
- A bug that causes intestinal infection – helicobacter pylori
- The immune system
The condition is a progressive disease. Many people who develop rosacea say they always flush or blush easily. Over time, the flushing worsens and may develop into persistent redness, bumps and thickened skin.
Rosacea may come and go. Certain things can cause it to flare up, including:
- Extreme heat and cold
- Certain medications
- Spicy foods
- Hot drinks
