Hangnails
Everyone – kids and adults – gets hangnails. Hangnails are actually pieces of skin at the edge of the nails that tear and sometimes even bleed. They can hurt and if you or your child chew at them or tear them, they can get infected.
There are some simple steps to take care of hangnails.
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Cut the hangnail cleanly with a nail clipper or small nail scissors. Don’t tear off the hangnail. At the age of 10 or so, your child may be able to use the clipper without your help.
- Dab on a little antibiotic cream if the skin is red or sore. Cover it with a bandage for a day or two to protect it.
If the hangnail does become infected, see your family doctor or a dermatologist.
