Hair Removal
There are a number of ways to remove unwanted hair temporarily:
- Shaving
- Plucking and tweezing
- Waxing
- Hair-removal cream (depilatories) – one type, available by prescription, prevents hair regrowth on the face once the hair has been removed.
Other treatments, which last longer, include:
- Electrolysis – This includes putting a needle into each hair follicle and burning it so that it stops producing hair permanently. Because many follicles produce hair in a small area, a number of treatments are necessary. It may be uncomfortable, but pain relievers should help.
- Lasers and light devices – Lasers and light devices vaporize the hair. Advances are making this a more permanent option, as well as reducing the incidents of side effects. Because not all hair follicles are active at the same time, one treatment will reduce hair growth by 10 percent to 25 percent. Two to six treatments usually are required to see the best results. Some types of lasers work better on lighter-skinned people, others work better on people with darker skin. People with dark hair and light skin are most likely to respond well to laser treatment.
Laser hair treatment may be a little uncomfortable if the area to be treated is very sensitive or large, but a topical anesthetic sometimes used before the treatment can help. Temporary side effects of laser treatment may include swelling, pain and redness around the treatment area. Icepacks can reduce the swelling and pain relief medication will help with discomfort.
Because laser treatment requires training and expertise, it should be performed by a dermatologist, which also will significantly reduce the likelihood of potential side effects.
