Treatments
Using sunscreen to prevent further damage is the most important thing to do. Beyond that, a number of treatments can erase or diminish wrinkles, smooth out the surface of the skin, and fade or remove spots. Treatment options range from topical creams to surgery.
Topical Creams
Many topical creams are available over the counter; others require a prescription from a dermatologist. Effective active ingredients include:
- Retinoids and other vitamin A derivates
- Alpha hydroxy acids
- Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E
Cosmetic Procedures
In addition, dermatologists offer a number of cosmetic procedures that may help reverse some of the effects of aging. Some of the more common procedures include:
- Botulinum rejuvenation
- Chemical peels
- Fillers
- Intense pulse light
- Laser skin resurfacing
- Microdermabrasion
Most of these treatments are not permanent because the skin continues to age. But if you take good care of your skin and protect it from the sun, the treatments should last longer.
